Take your learning beyond the classroom!

Student experiences are an excellent way to make sure you are choosing a career that is the best fit for you. Through job shadowing and student rotations you will better understand the roles of a variety of healthcare team members and the responsibilities of each.

Job Shadow

Job shadowing provides students with the opportunity to observe a staff member performing their daily work routine in their designated department. This Student Experience allows students the opportunity to explore different careers and get a realistic picture of the tasks performed in that role. This will allow you to make an informed decision about your future career and professional goals. Job shadows at FHN are typically 2 hours per department and are for observation only. If you would like to shadow longer than 2 hours, please indicate this and we will check with the department to see if they are able to accommodate.

Job shadowing is an amazing experience, which provides career exploration for students 17 years old and older as well as community members—with an interest in learning more and/or pursuing a career in healthcare.

Student Rotations

Internship: An internship is a professional learning experience that offers meaningful and practical work related to a student’s field of study or career interest.

An internship allows individuals to:

  • Add value to your resume
  • Hands-on career exploration
  • Immerse yourself in a workplace environment while applying yourself to projects
  • Apply skills learned from your studies
  • Expand your knowledge of what it is like to work inside a specific field while under the guidance of our healthcare experts/professionals
  • Make career connections and strengthen your network

Externship: An externship is a professional learning experience that offers practical work expertise during their educational pursuits. Like an internship, it provides an opportunity for students to get valuable work experience. Even though the student is directly in a department, they are only shadowing staff members rather than having projects delegated/ assigned, such as one would have in an internship.

An externship allows individuals to:

  • Add value to your resume
  • Hands-on career exploration
  • Explore a career field and experience what the “day to day” is like for our staff
  • Learn how to apply your academic major/coursework through discussions with our healthcare experts/professionals
  • Assess your "fit" for a particular position or organization
  • Make career connections and strengthen your network
